Book Cover Design Tips That Help a Self-Published Book Sell

Book cover mockups and color swatches on a design desk

Most people meet your book as a small rectangle on a phone. If the title is unreadable there, the rest of the design does not matter yet.

Look at the current bestsellers in your exact category, not at covers you personally admire from another genre. Romance, thriller, business, and literary fiction each have a visual dialect. Matching it is clarity, not copying.

Use one strong image or one strong type treatment. Covers fail when they try to illustrate the whole plot. A single mood, a single object, or a clear title treatment is easier to recognize.

Contrast is not optional. Light text on a light sky disappears in a store grid. Check the cover in black and white. If the title vanishes, the color version will vanish on a dim screen too.

Print needs more than the front. Spine width depends on page count and paper. Back copy has to fit, and the barcode needs a quiet corner. Design the wrap with the final trim size, not a square social graphic stretched later.

Pinallo’s cover step is tied to the same book as the manuscript, so the title, author name, and print size stay consistent when you export.
